Windows Live Local
This is kind of a neat Windows site. The following functions can be performed: (click on the above hyperlink if you want to try it).
Search What and Where
Unlike traditional online search engines, with Windows Live Local you can find information based on a specific location. You can search for both What (such as a specific business, a point-of-interest category like museums, or a type of store) and Where (such as a place name or an address), just What, or just Where. If you don't specify a location, Windows Live Local filters your search results based on the current map view.
Search results show up as pushpins on the map and as a list in a search results panel on the left side of your screen.
Searching for both What and Where
Allow one to Specify what you are looking for (such as movie theaters or parks) and where you want to find it (a street address, city, or a place name), and then click on Local Search. The map view changes to include the Where that you specified, a search results panel opens on the left side of your screen, and pushpins on the map mark the locations of the results listings. Notice that the color of the pushpins matches the color of the title bar in the search results panel.
Searching for What only
Specify what you are looking for (such as museums or a type of restaurant), and then click Local Search. The search results appear in the current map view. If you move the map or zoom in or out, your search results are automatically updated.
Note: You can search for a business name, a business category, a keyword, and even a business phone number.
Searching for Where only
Type the location you're looking for, and then click Local Search. You can search for a full address (110 23rd St NW, Washington, DC 20037), part of an address (Chicago, IL), a place name (Lincoln Memorial), or just a neighborhood (Capitol Hill, Seattle, WA). The map view changes so that it is centered on that location.
Note: When finding a street address, you will typically get the best search results by including the full address and including commas. For example, "110 23rd St NW, Washington, DC 20037" may result in a better address match than "110 23rd NW Washington DC".
Notice that if you move the map or zoom in or out, your search results are automatically updated.
Using Locate Me
If you are using the Locate me feature, Windows Live Local automatically filters your search results based on your physical location.
You can find information based on a specific location. You can search for both What (such as a specific business, a point-of-interest category like museums, or a type of store) and Where (such as a place name or an address), just What, or just Where. If you don't specify a location, Windows Live Local filters your search results based on the current map view.
